Explaining the volatility in applicant and application volumes

Hi. This is Susan Krinsky at LSAC with the October edition of Keeping Up to Data.
We’ve now completed the third test administration in the current testing year, and although we do not yet have a final test taker number for the September 2019 test, there were just over 21,000 registrants as of the morning of the test. Registration for the October test administration (which has now closed) is just over 20,000 registrants, and for November, we have over 22,000 registrants as of the beginning of October as this podcast is being recorded. The registration deadline for the November test has been extended to October 15, so I will have more information about November test registration numbers in the next podcast.
Applicant and application volumes are notoriously volatile this early in the admission cycle. A year ago at this time, we had received 7.8% of the total number of applicants we would see by the end of the 2018-2019 admission cycle, but only 5% of the applications. While the volumes of both applicants and applications appear to be up compared to last year, it’s too early to make any predictions.
As of the day I am recording this podcast, the Houston forum has not yet taken place. But for the three forums for which we do have data — Washington, D.C., Miami, and Toronto combined — attendance was virtually flat, up by 0.3%. Looked at individually, attendance at the Washington, D.C., forum in July was down 7.85%, while attendance at both Toronto and Miami was up by slightly over 15%.
